Two of Korea’s biggest stars, Son Ye Jin and Ji Chang Wook, are currently in talks to star in a historical adaptation of the classic French novel “Dangerous Liaisons.” While nothing has been confirmed yet, reports from Hallyu sites Allkpop and Soompi have indicated that the two actors are being considered for the lead roles in the upcoming drama, which has a working title of “Scandal.”
Both Son Ye Jin and Ji Chang Wook’s agencies have responded to the casting offer. MSteam Entertainment, Ye Jin’s agency, stated that she has received a casting offer for Netflix’s “Scandal” and is currently reviewing it. Similarly, Chang Wook’s agency, Spring Company, confirmed that the actor is also reviewing the offer.
The planned drama is a remake of the 2003 Korean film “Untold Scandal,” which was set in Korea’s Joseon dynasty. The film follows the story of Lady Jo and playboy Jo-won as they collaborate to corrupt innocent Lady Suk. Reports from Allkpop suggest that Son Ye Jin and Ji Chang Wook are being tapped to play the roles of Lady Jo and Jo-won, respectively, with production expected to start in March 2025.
The original novel, “Dangerous Liaisons,” was published by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos in 1782 and tells the story of lovers Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont who engage in manipulating and seducing others for their own amusement. The novel has inspired various adaptations in the form of stage plays, operas, and films, with the most notable being the 1988 film starring John Malkovich, Glenn Close, Uma Thurman, and Michelle Pfeiffer, as well as the 1999 film “Cruel Intentions” starring Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Philippe.
This upcoming historical adaptation featuring Son Ye Jin and Ji Chang Wook adds to the trend of remaking classic stories for modern audiences. Other projects in the works include a historical remake of “Secret Garden” starring Sejeong and Kang Tae Oh. As the Korean Wave continues to make waves globally, fans eagerly anticipate the on-screen pairing of these beloved actors in what promises to be an intriguing and captivating drama.
