Award-winning singer Mariah Carey has emerged victorious in a copyright lawsuit filed against her classic holiday hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” The lawsuit, which claimed that Carey had stolen elements from a songwriter’s track, was dismissed by a Los Angeles federal judge.
The judge also imposed sanctions on the songwriter, Andy Stone of Vince Vance & the Valiants, to cover some or all of Carey’s legal fees. The judge deemed Stone’s lawsuit as frivolous and lacking in evidence to prove that Carey had copied his 1989 song of the same name.
Carey’s iconic Christmas song was released in 1994 and has since become a holiday staple, dominating charts every holiday season. Stone had initially sought $20 million for copyright infringement and at least $40 million for unjust enrichment and violations of the American Trademark Act from Carey and songwriter Walter Afansieff.
Following a musicology analysis, the judge determined that the two songs were unique and that the only similarity between them was the “use of a common lyrical idea and Christmas song clichés that were in common use” before Stone’s claims.
Despite the dismissal of the lawsuit, Stone has expressed his intention to appeal the decision. Meanwhile, Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” recently made history by becoming the first holiday track to reach two billion streams on Spotify.
