Disney recently released a teaser trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to “Freaky Friday,” entitled “Freakier Friday.” The original film, which was released in 2003 and based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name, starred Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis as a mother and daughter who switch bodies.
The teaser for “Freakier Friday” opens with Jamie Lee Curtis’ character, Tess Coleman, and Lindsay Lohan’s character, Anna Coleman, visiting a fortune teller who mentions that their “lifelines have intersected before” and that they may need to learn a lesson again. The teaser sets the stage for another body-switching adventure as the characters wake up the next morning in different bodies once again.
However, in this sequel, the body switch is a bit different. This time, Anna switches bodies with her daughter Harper, played by Julia Butters, while Tess switches bodies with Anna’s soon-to-be stepdaughter Lily, portrayed by Sophia Hammons. The younger girls are understandably shocked by the switch, with Lily exclaiming, “My face looks like a Birkin bag that’s been left out in the sun to rot!”
As the story unfolds, the characters navigate their new bodies and try to figure out how to reverse the change. The teaser shows familiar scenes reminiscent of the original film, with Tess playing pickleball, Anna going to work, and Harper and Lily attending school.
Harper and Lily attempt to reverse the switch by running Tess and Anna’s bodies into each other, mirroring a scene from the 2003 film. However, much like before, their efforts are unsuccessful. The teaser ends with Lily, in Tess’ body, encouraging Harper, in Anna’s body, to make a dramatic entrance, reminiscent of a scene featuring Chad Michael Murray’s character Jake, Anna’s boyfriend from the first film.
Returning cast members from the 2003 film include Mark Harmon as Tess’ husband Ryan, Ryan Malgarini as Anna’s brother Harry, Stephen Tobolowsky as Elton Bates, Christina Vidal and Haley Hudson as Anna’s best friends, and Lucille Soong and Rosalind Chao as the Chinese mother-and-daughter duo responsible for the original body switch.
Joining the cast as newcomers are Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons, as well as Filipino-Canadian actor Manny Jacinto, who plays Eric, Anna’s current boyfriend and Lily’s father. Directed by Nisha Ganatra, “Freakier Friday” is set to hit theaters in August 2025.
Fans of the original film can look forward to another entertaining body-switching adventure with “Freakier Friday,” as Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reprise their roles in this highly anticipated sequel. Stay tuned for more updates as the release date approaches.
