Get ready for another intense competition as Netflix announced the release date for the highly anticipated second season of the hit South Korean series, “Squid Game.” The second season is set to drop on December 26, as revealed in a press release on August 1. Director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Do-hyuk expressed his excitement about returning to the world of “Squid Game,” stating that it feels “surreal” to continue the story.
The second season of “Squid Game” will pick up three years after Player 456 Sung Gi-hun, portrayed by Lee Jung-jae, emerged victorious in the deadly competition. Sung Gi-hun embarks on a new mission to uncover the truth behind the organizers of the deadly games by participating in another death-defying competition. Alongside Lee Jung-jae, actors Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming season.
New characters will also be introduced in the second season, played by Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-guen. Details about their characters have not been revealed yet. In addition to the announcement of the premiere date for the second season, Netflix confirmed that a third and final season of “Squid Game” is in the works, scheduled to air in 2025.
Originally premiering in September 2021, “Squid Game” captivated audiences with its intense storyline of cash-strapped contestants competing in deadly childhood games for a chance to win a cash prize. The series, consisting of nine episodes, quickly became Netflix’s biggest original series launch. The first season of “Squid Game” also received critical acclaim, with actor O Yeong-su winning a Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series for his role as Oh Il-nam, the elderly player.
Furthermore, “Squid Game” made history at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards by being the first non-English-language series to receive nominations in various categories, including Best Cast in a Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series for Lee Jung-jae, Best Actress in a Drama Series for Hoyeon Jung, and Best Stunt Ensemble for a Drama Series.
