Lea Salonga, the Tony award-winning singer-actress, is set to make her highly-anticipated return to Broadway as both cast member and production staff in the musical “Here Lies Love.” The production tells the story of former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and his wife, Imelda Marcos.
Salonga, who announced her role as Aurora Aquino, the mother of the late senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., expressed her excitement for the show’s limited guest engagement from July 11 to August 13. The actress, who made her Broadway debut as Kim in “Miss Saigon” in 1991, also shared that her participation in the musical is “special” to her as a Filipina artist.
In addition to her role, Salonga was also tapped to be a producer for the musical and is set to perform the ballad, “Just Ask The Flowers.” The production is reportedly holding an international casting search for the remaining 20 actors.
“Lea Salonga has singularly secured a place for Filipinos on the Broadway stage. That she joins us as both performer and producer, where she creates a pipeline for Filipina actresses, is profoundly historic. Lea continues to be a beacon of light and source of pride for the Philippines,” producer and costume designer Clint Ramos said in a statement.
Salonga is well-known for her work in various musical theater productions, including “Miss Saigon,” “Les Miserables,” and as the singing voice of Disney characters in “Mulan” and “Aladdin.” Her return to Broadway is highly anticipated by her fans and theater enthusiasts alike.
