Ed Sheeran has released his highly anticipated new single “Eyes Closed” alongside an official video. Originally written as a break-up song, the lyrics took on a new meaning after Ed suffered a heartbreaking loss. The song captures the pain of losing someone and the feeling of being unable to escape memories of that person.
In the official video, directed by Mia Barnes, Ed is followed by a blue monster that serves as a metaphor for grief. No matter where he goes, the monster follows him, reminding him of the void in his life.
When asked about the song and the video, Ed explains, “This song is about losing someone and feeling like you expect to bump into them every time you go out. You have to take yourself out of reality to numb the pain of loss, but certain things bring you right back into it.”
The concept for the video was inspired by movies like “Harvey,” where the main character has an imaginary friend who is a giant rabbit that no one can see. Ed wanted to create his own big blue monster to represent the sadness that follows you around and engulfs the rooms you’re in.
“Eyes Closed” is one of the most pop-leaning tracks on Ed’s upcoming album “-,” which will be released on May 5. The fourteen-track record was written and recorded with Aaron Dessner (The National) in February of last year after a series of hard-hitting events impacted Ed’s life.
